Netflixs Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina sued by Satanic Temple

The devil is sometimes in the details, and thats why Netflix is being sued over its new series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

The show stars Kiernan Shipka, best known for portraying Don Drapers daughter Sally in the AMC series Mad Men, as 16-year-old Sabrina Spellman, a half-witch half-mortal wrestling with whether she should forgo her average teenage life by joining the Church of Night.

The Salem, Massachusetts-based Satanic Temple, a political activism group that advocates for free will and compassion toward all creatures, said the monument Baphomet with Children appears in at least four of first 10 episodes of the show in ways that imply it “stands for evil.”

Netflix sued over goat-headed deity in Sabrina series

“The unique elements of TSTs expression of the idea of Baphomet, and particularly the use of a male chest rather than voluptuous large female breasts, and the configuration with a small boy and small girl looking at the Sabbatic Goat head of the statue, were unquestionably copied by defendants,” the complaint said.

As things stand, those who (probably) won’t be a part of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 2 cast include Justin Dobies as Tommy (Harvey’s brother) and Bronson Pinchot as Principal Hawthorne as both characters met their end in season 1. Having said that, don’t rule them out completely. This is a show, after all, that deals in resurrections, ghosts, and other supernatural beings on a semi-regular basis, so there’s no saying both Dobies and Pinchot won’t turn up in season 2 in some capacity or other. Personally, I’d be very surprised if Tommy doesn’t come back to haunt Harvey either physically or metaphorically.

The Satanic Temples complaint also said the evil antagonists portrayed in the series are depicted “in stark contrast to TSTs tenets and beliefs.”

“Defendants prominent use of it as the central focal point of the school associated with evil, cannibalism and possibly murder is injurious to the Satanic Temples business,” the lawsuit says.

In addition to monetary relief, the lawsuit seeks digital removal of the statue from future distributions of the series.

The lawsuit, filed at a federal court in New York on Thursday, claims the depiction of Baphomet constitutes misappropriation, confusion of origin and injury of reputation.

“Maybe that’s because gay characters pop up in just about every product out of Hollywood. Men dress as women, give lap dances to other men and even get married in national awards shows like the Grammys and Tony Awards,” she wrote. “Media festivals like South by Southwest and Sundance celebrate gay sex and all other kinds of relationships as completely normal. TV shows like 'Modern Family,' 'The New Normal' and 'The Fosters' attempt to show that gay families are just as common and normal as any other family.”

Legal documents state: "What makes this case particularly striking and significant is that it arises in the context of Defendants who are highly sophisticated media production and distribution companies which blatantly misappropriated Plaintiffs unique expression of an idea even though they have a long history of vigorously protecting their own intellectual property."

It adds the Satanic Temple created its depiction of Baphomet in part "to promote First Amendment values of separation of church and state and equal protection".

Older parents might remember the Sabrina the teenage witch character of the Archie comic books in the 1960s. She was a blonde, girl-next-door type who just happened to be able to cast spells and do a little magic. (In earlier adaptations, Sabrina's abilities were “typically depicted as being morally-neutral, like double-jointed knees,” Paul Asay wrote at PluggedIn.)

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is a supernatural drama programme starring US actress Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman, a half-mortal half-witch who is torn between her two identities.

It is based of the same comic book series which spawned Sabrina The Teenage Witch, starring Melissa Joan Hart and running from 1996-2003.

The Satanic Temple says it does not worship Satan but instead works to "encourage benevolence and empathy among all people".
