Brexit secretary hadnt quite understood the full extent to which UK was reliant on the strait

The Brexit secretary has only just learned the importance of trade through the Dover-Calais crossing.

Speaking at an event on Brexit and the tech industry, Raab said that consumers would lose out if new rules create delays at the border.

“And thats one of the reasons why, and theres been a lot of controversy about this, but one of the reasons why we wanted to make sure that we have a very specific and very proximate relationship with the EU to ensure frictionless trade at the border, particularly for just-in-time manufacturing goods whether its pharmaceutical goods or perishable goods like food.”

“I dont think its a question so much of the risk of major shortages but I think probably the average consumer might not be aware of the full extent to which the choice of goods that we have in the stores are dependent on one or two very specific trade routes.”

Dominic Raab gives Remainers an early Xmas present with mindblowing admission

Politicians and campaigners, including the scientist and broadcaster Brian Cox, reacted to his words with surprise and alarm.

His little knowledge (lets call it blind ignorance) crystallised the view of British business that this is a government that not only doesnt understand business, it doesnt care. What it cares about is holding itself together, like a chief exec with a woeful set of figures preparing to bluff the board into why its somebody elses fault their business is failing.

Jenny Chapman, the shadow Brexit minister, said: How are we meant to trust this government to deliver a good deal for the country when we have a Brexit secretary who doesnt even understand the very basics of Brexit?

Read more Labour MP Jo Stevens of Best for Britain, an anti-Brexit group, said: We finally have an admission of what weve known all along – that the Brexiteers hadnt really thought through any of the impacts of leaving the EU. These comments are shocking.

And even if Raab is right and the EU grants the UK an adequacy deal at record speed, the nation must ensure its laws stay in line with EU ones. But Raab, the Brexiteer, suggested the UK might want to deviate from them, saying he is “not sure the EU is the world-leading protector of data”.
