What we know about the California shooting and gunman

Read more Ron Helus, a Ventura county sheriffs sergeant, was among those killed at the Borderline Bar and Grill, about 40 miles west of Los Angeles. Long was found dead at the scene, having apparently shot himself.

Ventura county sheriff Geoff Dean said sheriffs deputies were called to Longs home in Newbury Park, five miles west of Thousand Oaks, in April 2018. They found Long somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally, Dean said. The deputies called in mental health specialists. The specialists decided Longs mental state did not require him to be detained for further assessment.

We are devastated to report that one of our students, Alaina Housley, was among those who passed away at Borderline in Thousand Oaks last night. Our hearts are broken with the news of this profound loss. We offer our deepest condolences to the Housley family and ask that our community join us in keeping Alainas family, friends, and loved ones in their prayers during this incredibly difficult time.We are here to guide and support our students, faculty, staff, and alumni in as many ways as we can, and this includes providing access to grief counselors and licensed clinicians to help them cope with the pain and sorrow this tragedy brings. In this time of deep concern and sadness, we are focused on making sure the entire Pepperdine family comes together in a compassionate way that leads to individual and community healing.

Dean said Long was a veteran of the US Marine Corps. The 28-year-old was on active duty with the marines from August 2008 to March 2013, CNN reported, citing the Department of Defense. The marine corps told news organizations that Long served in Afghanistan between November 2010 and June 2011. He was a machine gunner.

Authorities said the .45 caliber Glock handgun used in the shooting was legally purchased. But Dean said Long had used an extended magazine – illegal in California – during the shooting, which would enable the weapon to fire more rounds before needing to be reloaded.

In April, officers responded to a disturbance at Long's home, and he was somewhat irate and acting irrationally, Dean said. A mental health specialist met with him and ultimately decided not to detain him under laws pertaining to his mental health.

Dean said officials had been unable to find a connection between Long and the Borderline bar. We have no idea what the motive was at this point, Dean said. Neighbors told local news channel ABC6 that Long lived with his mother, who had expressed concern over her sons behavior.

Neighbor Richard Berge said Long's mother told him she was concerned about her son, though not worried about her own safety, and that "she was … kind of beside herself, she didn't know what to do because he wouldn't get help."
