The doting grandfather: Heartwarming picture shows Charles playing with young Prince Louis

Proudly laughing at his new grandson, Prince Louis, this is the image that shatters the belief Prince Charles is anything but a doting grandparent.

The never seen before photograph was featured last night in a fascinating BBC documentary marking the heir to the thrones 70th birthday next week.

He has, it seems, made his position clear. He knows the difference between being Prince of Wales and being monarch, and will make sure that he operates within what he calls the constitutional parameters.

Taken in September in the gardens at Clarence House, the princes official London residence, it shows the Duchess of Cambridge, wearing a spotted blue dress, holding up little Louis, who was born in April, to see his grandfather.

Charles operates in a world of uninmagineable luxury, cossetted and pampered, with special toilet seats, tea bags, and china travelling everywhere he deigns to visit. The documentary reveals he works so hard that he falls asleep at his desk – well, so do most people, its nothing special. Shift workers driving cabs or buses, or working in Amazon warehouses would know that feeling only too well.

If I sound like a republican, its because I grew up in half a terraced house with an outside toilet – but my working class parents worshipped the Royal family – they provided a beacon of stability, and a sign that Britain was returning to normal after the horrors of World War 2. Even though my dad was a staunch left-winger, he would not have disbanded the Royals.

Little boy behind Meghan Markles pasta necklace raises over £4,000 for charity

The little prince, who would have been aged around five months at the time, reaches out and grabs his grandfathers hands with his fingers, leaving Charles chuckling with delight.

A second unseen image shows the Prince playing with the Duchess of Cornwalls grandchildren in a garden, swinging around a little girl thought to be Lola Parker Bowles, daughter of Camillas son, Tom.

Speaking about the moment he met Meghan, his mum Rowan said that her son "woke up with a cough" and wanted the day off from school before making the necklace for "the princess and the prince". Gavin has gone on to sell every single one of his 400 pasta necklaces, and has risen $8,000 Australian dollars, which is around £4000. The money went to research into stillborn deaths after Gavin's sister Clara died a few years before he was born. Speaking about the charity on his website, Gavin wrote: "I want to be like the Prince and Princess and support charities. I'd love to start my own charity in honour of my sister."

The prince, dressed in a beige suit, open-necked shirt and tasseled loafers, appears to be having as much fun as the giggling youngster.

What we learnt from Las Vegas was that one form of architecture could be a decorated shed, and we certainly got that with the National Gallery extension. Whether the decoration is appropriate or not is a question, in my opinion not.But the internal planning is neither classical nor modern, but one of the least controlled interior spaces I know by so-called Starchitects.Certainly no lesson had been learnt from either Aalto or Scharoun about how to plan large public buildings. It does not help to say that the public say the prefer traditional architecture “whatever that means”. For example on Open City weekend, all the best modern buildings have long queues or are booked out. Show people fine modern buildings, and they may prefer them.Prince Charles is less in touch with public perception of architecture than the opinions of his cronies and those who hang on in the hopes of picking up a nice project by the back door.
