WINCHESTER, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — The Winchester Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own after an on-duty officer was killed in a crash Saturday night.

According to a release, 30-year-old Hunter Edwards was responding to a reported fight on South Loudoun Street just before 11 p.m.

Edwards served in the departments patrol division for four years, according to WPD. He was a member of the SWAT team and also served in the Civil Disturbance Unit.

Police said Edwards crashed his car a few blocks away on Jubal Early Drive, and his car was the only one involved in the crash.

WINCHESTER, Va. (WHSV) — A Winchester Police officer was killed while on duty in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday evening, according to a release by the agency.

Police said Edwards was also a member of the SWAT team and also served on the Civil Disturbance Unit.

Edwards served the Winchester area for four years and was a member of the SWAT team. Winchester Police say he is survived by his wife, Tara, and a stepson.

Officer Hunter Edwards died in a single vehicle crash on West Jubal Drive in Winchester while responding to reports of an altercation nearby just before 11 p.m., Winchester police said. He was 30 years old.

According to Winchester Police, 30-year-old Officer Hunter Edwards was responding to a call just before 11 p.m. when his vehicle crashed on West Jubal Drive.

Sunday morning, police Chief John Piper and other members of the force gathered to pay their respects at Winchester Medical Center, where he passed. 

In his 4 years of service on the Winchester Police Department’s Patrol Division, Edwards also served as a member of the SWAT team and the Civil Disturbance Unit.

Edwards is survived by his wife, Tara Edwards, his stepson and other family members. Funeral arrangements are underway.
