Could Ikea be about to open a mini store in Stoke-on-Trent?

The budget furniture seller, which has 21 full-sized stores and 11,380 workers, revealed a 5.9pc hike in revenues to £2bn after digital sales soared 14.4pc.

But Javier Quiñones, who runs Ikeas UK arm, declined to reveal whether revenues were up on a like-for-like basis – excluding new stores in Exeter and Sheffield.

He was also tight-lipped when asked if profits had bounced back after plunging more than a third to £87m last year, but admitted the company was still bearing the brunt of a fall in the value of the pound after deciding…

“Whilst were pleased with our performance, we recognise that a challenging retail and economic environment means we need to continue to respond to our customers needs and invest in an Ikea that is here for people, whenever and wherever they need us,” he said.

There have been many reports that the furniture retailer would like to open in Gloucester filling the gap between Bristol and Birmingham but so far no progress.

Online was the standout sales driver, with 199.3 million visits to Ikeas website, an increase of 13.4 per cent. Website sales grew by 14.4 per cent and now represent 15.5 per cent of total sales.

Now following a positive response to Ikeas smaller city centre store in Londons Tottenham Court Road, the Scandinavian company is likely to expand the idea across the country.

Ikea has announced that its UK revenues in the year to 31 August rose were up by 5.9 per cent to £1.96bn.

Ikea has also this year announced the opening of its “Planning Studio” on Tottenham Court Road, central London, the first step in what it describes as a “city centre approach”.

The furniture retailer has opened two new large-format stores in Sheffield and Exeter taking its nationwide total to 21.

Punchline hopes Ikea does come to Gloucester adding to the retail mix the city now has to offer. What better place than the Peel Centre where the ToysRUs store is now empty and there is plenty of space next to the new Next store which is set to open next year.
