Labour councillors house targeted in 3am shooting in Sheffield

A police cordon remains in place outside the house belonging to Mohammad Maroof, who is standing for re-election in the Nether Edge and Sharrow ward on 2 May. The shots were fired at a window and the front door in the early hours of Tuesday.

He was obviously shaken up and we are concerned about his safety because he is standing for election and he has a young family. We will be issuing a further statement later today, Steinke said.

It is claimed that Councillor Mohammad Maroof, who represents Nether Edge and Sharrow for Labour, lives there with his family.

A neighbour told the Sheffield Star she heard a loud bang at about 3.20am, and claimed it was not an isolated incident.

Sorry, were having problems with our video player at the moment, but are working to fix it as soon as we can

Its scary. I live just up the road and walked past this morning with my kids and they saw the gunshot holes in the window and asked what they were. How do I explain it to them? Its happening far too often and its really worrying, said the woman, who did not want to be named.

In a statement, South Yorkshire police said officers were called to a property in the Nether Edge area in the early morning after reports of shots being fired.

Police attended the scene and found damage to a window consistent with shotgun discharge. The area was searched but the offenders could not be located, the force said.

Inquiries are ongoing and there is an increased police presence in the area as our officers continue their investigation.

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire police on 101 and quote incident number 111 of 23 April.

The property on Edgedale Road in Nether Edge reportedly belongs to Sheffield city Councillor Mohammad Maroof. South Yorkshire police remain at the scene. The force has confirmed it was alerted to the incident during the early hours of the morning and found damage to a window which is “consistent with shotgun discharge”.

A resident told the Sheffield Star: “Just after 3am, I heard a bang and as soon as the bang went the car alarms went off. I thought somebody had hit a car it was that loud. I didnt hear any cars pull up so whether they were on foot I dont know.”

He added: “About 20 minutes later I was aware there was still stuff going on outside and I went out and there were two armed police officers with torches looking for cartridges.”

Anyone with information is urged to call the police on 101 quoting incident number 111 of 23 April 2019.

In December 2018 he was suspended by the Labour council after he sent an explicit image of a topless woman to a group of campaigners.

The councillor shared the photograph to a Mums United WhatsApp group while its founder, Sahira Irshad, presented a petition on knife crime.

Mr Mahroof, who represents the Nether Edge and Sharrow areas of Sheffield, claimed he was trying to attach a video of the speech and apologised for making an “honest mistake”.

“As soon as I realised, I asked for it to be deleted as I couldnt delete it myself. It was only there for a second.”

In a statement, he said: “I want to again sincerely apologise for the offence and hurt caused, and I will ensure that something like this does not happen again.

“I have accepted the disciplinary action and remain absolutely committed to my community work and serving my constituents.”

A spokesman for the Labour Group said: “Our investigation into Coun Maroof has concluded and appropriate disciplinary action has been taken. Coun Maroof has accepted this and repeated his unreserved apology.”
