Sheffield United Boss Admits Ben Woodburn Could Return to Liverpool Early From Poor Loan Spell

Brentford v Sheffield United

Sorry, were having problems with our video player at the moment, but are working to fix it as soon as we can

Changes: Still plans to make them after drawing with Rotherham on Saturday. No fresh injury issues; Paul Coutts, George Baldock and Conor Washington all in contention to start in London.

The teenager has managed just seven appearances in the Championship so far this season, making up a measly  155 minutes of game time in the process. His omission from the matchday squad on seven occasions has inevitably raised growing concerns over the value of his stint with Chris Wilder’s side.

Fall-out from Millers draw: Blades were called into training on Sunday. We had a honest, frank chat, stood out in the cold, but that didnt bother me. Im a big supporter of the players but that wasnt good enough from a team that represents our football club.

The Welshman was able to feature for the U23s thanks to a clause in his loan deal with Sheffield United stating his availability for Neil Critchley’s side if not included in the Blades’ senior matchday squad.

How players took it: If you speak to any of them, theyll realise it wasnt good enough so hopefully theyll use that as an experience going forward.

A return to Melwood looks the logical option at this stage given the prospect of a prominent role for the U23s and the chance to regain some momentum as one of the more experienced youngsters.

Brentford: Its been a difficult period for them after their change of manager [Dean Smith joining Aston Villa] but its always a tough place to go. They still have a group of players who have done well for them over the last few years and play with a set style and structure. They can be a handful for anyone, so well have to play the way we want to play. We were outstanding there last season so well be looking for something similar to that.

A superb flick between two markers invited teammates forward, before Adam Lewis’ eventual strike deflected in off Camacho for what would prove a rather fortuitous, yet deserved, winner.

Similarities between Blades and Bees: People talk about us being a passing team but I just want us to be an all round good team, we werent a good passing team on Saturday. They are possession-based and have a lot of technical players but theyll be saying the same thing, if they dont win individual battles it doesnt allow them to play, same as us.

Woodburn supplied a glimpse of his versatility throughout, impressing in both an advanced attacking position and then a deeper role after the interval.

Ben Woodburn, after he played 90 minutes for Liverpools U23s against Everton: Its been talked about [his loan being terminated in January]. The loan hasnt gone as well as Ben and us would have liked, for various reasons – like the form of Mark Duffy, whos probably playing the best football of his career, and the team as a whole.

Woodburn is expected to be recalled from his loan spell in January having seen his first team opportunities limited during his time at Bramall Lane.

Debrief from Saturday, what happened or didnt happen? A lot of things didnt happen from our point of view, it wasnt our best performance by a long way. We didnt play at our usual tempo and they did a job on us, so thats something we need to look at. It was a bitter pill to swallow.

It took just 11 minutes for the 19-year-old to make an impact when he helped trigger the move that lead to Rafael Camacho’s opener.

Down to United being below par rather than Millers doing well? – When we say yes and play at the tempo we want to play at, not many teams can stop it. But when we step off the gas, it gives teams a bit of a lift.

Ben Woodburn provided a reminder of his talent on Sunday as he starred in Liverpool’s mini-derby win over Everton.

Will there be a reaction? The gaffer always says he doesnt want us to be a spike team but we have over the last few weeks. But were a honest group and not one that will down tools or play half-heartedly. We gave it our all on Saturday but were slightly off it.

Sheffield United have endured a sticky spell that has seen them pick up only two points from a possible nine, the latest being a 2-2 draw at Rotherham where Jamie Proctor scored an injury time equaliser for the Millers.

For Blades manager Chris Wilder he now needs to re-group as he looks to find the form that had his side leading the Championship only a few weeks ago.

So is there anyone Wilder should drop from the Sheff Utd XI for the match against Brentford tomorrow?

He struggled to make a worthy impact against struggling Rotherham at the weekend and Leon Clarke will feel that he did enough to replace the former Ipswich man for their game against Brentford.

Clarke has only made nine league starts and will be keen to stake a claim for a regular starting spot in Chris Wilders team this season.

The Blades werent convincing against Rotherham so maybe theres opportunity for Wilder to shake things up.

His last goal was on October 6, so Wilder could look to restore the Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke relationship up top.

Clarke hasnt scored in five but that run is shorter than his teammates and he has an assist to his name, too.
