“I didn’t want to leave the house, I went back home to Top Valley and just stayed indoors for the whole time.

“I would say it was an outbreak, I know personally about ten people who had them, but everyone I spoke to said they knew loads of people who got them.

“I was taking ibuprofen and paracetamol with codeine, I’m not sure if the ibuprofen helped with the swelling or not, personally I think it just came and went as mumps do.”

A spokesman for Nottingham Trent University said: “Our GP practices have noticed a number of potential cases of mumps.

“If any students have any symptoms of the illness we would encourage them to visit their GP as they would do normally and inform a relevant member of staff on their course if it has an impact on their studies.”

Describing Mumps, the NHS says: “Mumps is a contagious viral infection that used to be common in children before the introduction of the MMR vaccine.

“Its most recognisable by the painful swellings at the side of the face under the ears (the parotid glands), giving a person with mumps a distinctive hamster face appearance.

“Other symptoms of mumps include headaches, joint pain and a high temperature, which may develop a few days before the swelling of the parotid glands.”
