A PEACEFUL march to commemorate the martyrdom of a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad took place earlier.

Hundreds gathered for the 36th Ashura march, which led them from the Islamic Society of Wales Mosque, on Hill Street, down Commercial Street, and back up Stow Hill, before returning to the Mosque.

The march commemorates Imam Hussain, who stood against Yazid, a tyrant leader who was usurping the rights of Iraqi citizens thousands of years ago.

Hussain fought , and died, along with 72 companions and family members, in a fight against 30,000 soldiers, in the Battle of Karbala.

The march began at the Shia Islamic Centre on Preston New Road, making its way down Addison Street and along Devonport Road.

The ritual is known as Ashura and is celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram, the first month of the lunar calendar.

It marks the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Holy Prophet in 680 AD in Karbala, near Baghdad in Iraq.
