Lyon v Manchester City

Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus have not travelled with Manchester City for their Champions League group game against Lyon.

The trio were not included in the 19-man travelling squad named for the Champions League Group F clash at Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday.

City lost to the Ligue 1 side in the reverse fixture but need only a point on Tuesday night to secure qualification to the last 16.

The Manchester City squad is in France ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League Group F game against Lyon at the Groupama Stadium.

Leading into the match, Pep Guardiola addressed the international media this afternoon to discuss Tuesday’s match and other big issues.

There has been some grim injury news leading into the game, with Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan not flying to France. Guardiola offered some updates on the three, with none of the injuries sounding too bad.

“Bernardo is in the last step,” Guardiola said. “I think hell be fit against Bournemouth. Gabriel had some muscular problem in the last action of the training session either. Its not too big either but hes not ready for tomorrow. Gundogan had a problem with the bone in his foot. We want to avoid more problems, hopefully against Bournemouth hell be ready.”

City’s injury list has suddenly grown, but Guardiola isn’t too fussed about it and will make do with his deep squad.

“I prefer to have all the squad to choose from but it is what it is. We have to adapt with the guys that are here and we will try to do a good job and the others who arent here will do their best to recover.”

We’ve predicted Phil Foden to start tomorrow and Guardiola said the 18-year-old is ready to play whenever called upon.

“When Phil appeared in the last pre-season game I was incredibly impressed and I think hes stronger, hes more conscious that hes able to play with us. He played 20 minutes for the last game and was so aggressive with the ball and intense without it.

“I have the feeling every time he played he played good. in pre-season, during the season, a few minutes or 90 minutes, he always plays good. Hes ready to play, hes part of the squad. Hes definitely ready.”

A win tomorrow would seal Group F for City, but a defeat would put Lyon top again with one set of matches to go. Guardiola knows his team must focus and get the job done in France.

“Tomorrow is a big chance to be in Europe in February. We lost one game and bounced back; we reacted so well but the job is not over. We have to win one more and hopefully, we can close the group stage.”

The money complaint continues to be thrown at City almost as an attempt to downplay Guardiola and his teams’ achievements. Guardiola is conscious of that and believes in the eyes of critics, City must win the Champions League or be deemed underachievers.

“For the people who doesn’t love us too much, whose argument is the money, we have to win the Champions League or it will be a failure.”
