Everton receive academy transfer ban after breaking Premier League rules

Everton have been banned from signing academy players for two years after being found guilty of breaching Premier League recruitment rules.

The Premier League revealed Everton academy staff had offered inducements to a player and his family to encourage him to register with the club.

Eden Hazard has dropped out of the top 20 after a back injury ruled him out of the win over Burnley and reduced him to a substitute’s role against Crystal Palace – although he did nab an assist.

Everton will not be allowed to recruit any academy player who has registered with another Premier League or Football League club in the preceding 18 months.

The Premier League also disclosed that Evertons own internal inquiry found similar misconduct regarding six other academy players.

Sterling is now in second place after he shone in Manchester City’s 6-1 thrashing of Southampton, with Chelsea creator Barkley in third.

Accepting the penalty, an Everton statement said: “We are extremely disappointed with some of the practices we have found which are not in line with our values and not acceptable to Everton Football Club.

“We have already commenced a full review of our academy operations and are committed to ensuring that issues like this do not happen again at Everton.”

Each player’s performance is assessed by a complex system which awards points for 33 different matchday stats.

Everton have been handed a two-year academy transfer ban after being found guilty of breaking Premier League rules.

Each action is worth more or less depending on whether the player is a goalkeeper, defender, midfielder or forward.

The Premier League said it had received evidence alleging that “Everton Academy staff offered inducements to a player and his family to encourage the player to register with the club”.

The rankings only take into account the last five matches, with the most recent games weighted more heavily.

Everton immediately admitted to the allegations, the Premier League said, with the clubs own internal investigation finding similar misconduct had occurred in relation to six other Academy players.

The Sky Sports power rankings calculate the form of every single player in the Premier League .

“In certain cases, it was found that the club provided false information to the League when questions had previously been raised about the circumstances in which Academy players registered with the club,” the Premier League said.

Everton will pay a fine of £500,000 and pay additional compensation payments to the former clubs of two Academy players.

The club said they were “extremely disappointed with some of the practices we have found which are not in line with our values”.

An Everton statement said: “We have already commenced a full review of our Academy operations and are committed to ensuring that issues like this do not happen again at Everton.”
