FSG respond to unfounded speculation Liverpool are up for sale

Report in leading American newspaper suggests Fenway Sports Group would allow Reds to change hands for £1.5bn

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have dismissed “unfounded speculation” that the club is for sale.

The club won the 2012 League Cup, finished second in the Premier League in 2013/14, and were beaten finalists in the 2016 League Cup and Europa League, as well as last season’s Champions League final.

American newspaper New York Post reported that principal owner John W Henry was privately inviting offers and would be willing to sell the Premier League club for a bid in excess of £1.53billion.

Henry, whose Fenway Sports Group completed their £300m takeover of Liverpool in October 2010, has overseen huge improvements at Anfield over the past eight years.

A Liverpool spokesperson said: “Loath as we are to give a story of this nature a meaningful response, on behalf of the clubs ownership I can completely dismiss this unfounded speculation.
