University building shut after hazardous material alert

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “SFRS was alerted at 6.21am on Thursday, November 8 to reports of an incident involving hazardous material at Oakfield Avenue, Glasgow.

“Operations control immediately mobilised a number of resources to the scene, where firefighters are carrying out atmospheric tests.

A spokesperson for the University of Glasgow said: “An alarm was triggered in the Stevenson sports building around 6.20am this morning. 

Please be aware that due to alarm going off, both theStevenson and Rankin buildings are currently closed , as is access to Oakfield Avenue. Further updates to follow

“The fire brigade attended and carried out atmospheric tests. A defective alarm has now been identified as the cause of the alarm being triggered.

“Scottish Fire and Rescue Service but have now left the scene and we are conducting an internal investigation. Both the Rankine building and the Stevenson sports facility have now reopened.”

A spokesperson said on Twitter: “On precautionary advice from the fire service, the Stevenson building is currently closed to the public.”

A ROAD at the University of Glasgow has been placed on lockdown this morning as “hazardous material” is investigated.

Update…. The Rankine building will shortly be fully open forboth staff and students. Updates on the Stevenson to follow. Sorry for anyinconvenience

Two Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) vehicles are currently stationed outside the institution’s Stevenson Building on Oakfield Avenue which houses the gym.
