Adam Hastings a lone bright spark as Glasgow Warriors make heavy weather of Dragons

Glasgow Warriors have long way to go to beat Saracens, says Rennie

Glasgow Warriors have a “long way to go” before they are ready to beat Saracens in the Champions Cup, says coach Dave Rennie.

After Saturdays 29-13 win over Dragons, Rennie says Warriors must improve if they want a winning start.

“It was a step up,” he said. “But weve a long way to go to put in a display that would challenge Saracens.”

Once again Adam Hastings, who already has two Man of the Match awards to his name this season, was the standout performer for Dave Rennies side.

Glasgow, who host Zebre next, ran in five tries against Dragons to go back to the top of Conference A after their humbling by Southern Kings last week.

But the Warriors head coach wanted his team to be “more clinical” and believes their error count will need to come down playing in Europe.

The second try finally came two minutes from the interval when Hastings pierced the Dragons line and then popped a clever pass out to Lee Jones, whose momentum saw him crash over. Hastings saw his conversion come back off the post to make it 12-6 at half-time. Glasgow got off to the best possible start in the first minute of the second half as Alex Dunbars delicious offload in the tackle was gleefully gobbled up by Lee Jones for his second try, Hastings adding the extras.

“When you play teams like Saracens theyre going to spread and cover field so we need to be able to adjust to that,” explained Rennie.

“What they are very good at is getting scrum penalties, putting you in the corner and driving and going an inch at a time.

After the shock defeat by Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth the previous Saturday, Rennie had called for a response from a much-changed team and, while the maximum points were duly bagged to stay top of Conference A, it was far from emphatic in what was a disjointed encounter played in swirling wind and rain.

“Theyll ask a lot of questions of us so were going to have to be really resolute defensively, which we saw a lot of [against Dragons]. It was much better but we need to look after the ball and apply pressure.

“I was really impressed with our captains and our leaders. We had a good talk on the way back from Africa and they drove a lot of stuff this week.”

THE Dragons were downed 29-13 by Glasgow in the Guinness PRO14. Here are the talking points from the clash at Scotstoun Stadium…

Glasgow remained in comfortable ascendancy and the fifth try came with a couple of minutes left as Dunbar got on the end of a sweet offload by sub scrum-half George Horne to cruise over and Hastings boot completed the scoring.

Put Ross Moriarty, Cory Hill and Ollie Griffiths in that XV and the Dragons could very well have left Glasgow with something to show for their efforts.

However, it’s daft to think that the Wales internationals can feature week in, week out in an increasingly brutal game.

Hill and Griffiths featured in the first four rounds while Moriarty has made three outings since being suspended for the opener.
