Three days later, it’s the final group game in the UEFA Nations League when Zlatko Dalic’s team are in town for what will be the third clash between our two nations in just a few months following the World Cup semi-final in July and October’s Nations League game in Rijeka.

"There have been ongoing discussions since Wayne retired about paying tribute to him and his England career," said the manager, who added Rooney had declined an opportunity to be honoured ahead of the World Cup so as not to take the attention away from those going to Russia.

And Southgate has handed a first England senior call-up to AFC Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, who was previously capped at U21 level in a game against France under Southgate four years ago.

"He's been involved with either scoring or assists, with a high number of goals this season, so it's a good opportunity for us to have a look at him and see how he fits into what we do, and for him to get a feel of working with the senior team."

There’s also a return to the squad for defender Michael Keane, whose form with Everton this term has seen him back in the group for the first time since last October.

The likes of Fabian Delph, Dele, Jesse Lingard and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are also back in the squad after missing out of last month’s games through injury.

"We went to Germany and they honoured Podolski, he started the game and we were all struck by the fact that it was a good way to recognise someone who's had a fantastic career for his country," he said.

Southgate and his staff will also be joined by Brighton & Hove Albions first team coach Paul Nevin, who will support the coaching staff for both of this months games.

Uncapped Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson has been included in the England squad for the friendly against the United States and the Nations League match against Croatia, the Football Association has announced.
