The former England No 1 joined the Clarets in the summer following 12 years at Manchester City, the final two of which were spent out on loan.

Sam Vokes nods rejuvenated Burnley to victory over toothless Cardiff

Hart spent a year in Serie A with Torino before a frustrating spell at West Ham United last season, which led to him losing his place in the England squad for the World Cup.

Cardiff have had difficulty as an attacking threat so far this term, but they at least looked bright on occasion against Burnley and Murphy was vital to that. The winger was a decent outlet on the left, with his pace causing problems and he looked the most threatening around the visitors goal, hitting the post in the first half before getting a deserved goal after the break.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson did the damage, scoring Burnleys first and setting up the winner for Sam Vokes on a day when Cardiff were entitled to feel the very least they deserved was a point. That they failed to pick up anything says much about their shortcomings at both ends of the pitch. Toothless up front and nowhere near good enough defensively, Cardiff were picked off by a Burnley side who scored from their only two attempts on target.

Burnley started the season with a draw and four consecutive defeats in the league, with their brief Europa League exploits perhaps explaining their difficult start. But, after a 4-0 win over Bournemouth last time and Sundays character-affirming triumph in Wales, Dyches side look to be getting back to their usual selves.

Read more The bigger picture is worrying for Cardiff. They have now failed to win in eight games in all competitions this season – the first time that has happened since the 1964-65 campaign – and it is hard to see things improving for Warnock and his players any time soon. They travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and the away trip after that is Liverpool.

– With Cardiff, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town all yet to win, this is just the third time in Premier League history that as many as three teams have failed to record a victory through their opening seven games of a campaign (also in 2004-05 and 2012-13).

Its a cruel game sometimes, Warnock said. But I cant fault the effort. Im disappointed to concede from the only two opportunities that they got. At the level were talking about you shouldnt concede goals like that. I thought it epitomised the whole game that Joe Hart got man of the match. Its a tough defeat to take.

The home side kept their focus and deservedly levelled through Josh Murphy at the end of a fine move, but Burnley rallied and ultimately consigned Cardiff to another defeat through Sam Vokes winner 20 minutes from time.

Hart was certainly impressive in goal and made a particularly important save in the context of the game when he tipped Josh Murphys curling shot over the bar.

Murphy was Cardiffs best attacking threat, though there can be little doubt that was partly down to him being up against Matt Lowton, who had immense difficulty keeping up with the former Norwich City youngster.

Two minutes later Burnley went up the other end and scored when Vokes, who was making his 100th Premier League appearance, stooped to head in Gudmundssons cross.

It was a goal that came against the run of play – all the momentum was with Cardiff after Murphy registered his first goal for the club on the hour with a superb side-foot finish from Bruno Ecuele Mangas cut-back – and exposed the defensive weaknesses that left Warnock so frustrated. Sean Morrison, the Cardiff centre-half, allowed Gudmundsson to run in behind him and Vokes made the most of the generous space he was afforded in the penalty area.

Burnley found themselves clinging on by half-time, with Kenneth Zohore forcing Joe Hart into a smart save, before Paterson saw a close-range header cleared in front of the goal-line by Matej Vydra.

Burnleys opening goal was a similar story. Cardiff were caught sleeping when Charlie Taylor took a throw-in quickly, Ashley Westwood stood up a cross at the far post and Gudmundsson, climbing above Greg Cunningham, squeezed his header inside Neil Etheridges near post via a touch off the goalkeepers left boot.

Neil Warnocks men came into the match on the back of games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, and although there were flashes of promise, they paid the price for their profligacy.

Weve been beaten by two lapses of concentration, said Warnock, who also felt Cardiff should have been awarded a clear penalty for handball when Callum Patersons shot was blocked.

– Burnley have recorded back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since April, having gone 10 games without a victory prior to their 4-0 win against Bournemouth last week.

Burnley had plenty of problems of their own until recently but back-to-back victories have lifted them to 12th place. In truth they looked way off the pace here for long periods and would have gone behind in the first half but for a fine one-handed stop from Hart, who kept out Kenneth Zohores stabbed left-footed shot.

Sean Dyches men took the lead against the run of play five minutes into the second half, as Gudmundsson rose above Greg Cunningham to beat Neil Etheridge with a header at his near post.

Sean Dyche, however, took encouragement from a resolute performance and the way Burnley defended so doggedly, especially after losing James Tarkowski to a groin injury in the first half. Its very difficult coming here, Burnleys manager said. They play on the front foot and put balls towards the box from virtually everywhere.
